Avoiding Hazardous Materials in Kitchen Cabinets
We are hearing a great deal about going green these days. Finding ways to save on energy and thus our energy bills are major benefits of being green. In addition to saving the environment, we can also preserve our own health by choosing materials that will provide a healthier environment within our homes.
It may take more effort to determine the right products, and it will likely even be more expensive, so it all boils down to what is the most important to you. If you want to use materials free of toxins, here are some things to look out for:
Formaldehyde – whether you know it or not, formaldehyde is widely used in many materials used to build cabinets. Particle board, plywood and MDF are three such materials which are bonded together with resins containing formaldehyde.
If your kitchen cabinets are made from these products, paint or seal all surfaces completely to reduce the gas that is emitted from formaldehyde for years after installation.
When painting, staining or sealing your cabinets (or anything else), select low or no VOC products. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) contain harmful carcinogens and can emit gases of all types into your home.
