Kitchen Modifications For Accessibility

Adapting a kitchen to meet the needs of a person who is wheelchair bound can make a huge difference in the quality of life of the individual. Many modifications can be made to an existing kitchen to allow easier access.

One of the major obstacles for those in wheel chairs is the inability to reach kitchen cabinets and counter tops. The American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides guidelines to assist contractors when designing and modifying rooms for handicapped access.

Tips to Consider:

1. Lower countertop height for wheelchair access
2. Convert tables into counters – table legs can easily be shortened
3. Place extensions on kitchen faucets for easier reach
4. Remove portions of lower cabinets to allow a wheel chair to fit underneath
5. Lower upper cabinets to a height that can be accessed
6. Place items used daily in the lowest cabinet shelves
7. Store non-perishable food on the lowest shelves in the pantry
8. Place toaster, microwave, and coffeepot in an accessible permanent spot
