How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets
Painting your kitchen cabinets for a new look is one way to update your kitchen without spending your entire home improvement budget. These steps are imperative for a job well done:
Remove the Hardware
You may want to replace your existing hardware once the painting is complete. Just be sure to choose hardware that will fit into existing holes or fill in the holes before you paint if you want a different type of hardware altogether.
Clean Thoroughly Before You Do Anything
Grease and dirt must be removed from your cabinet doors and facings before you sand and begin to paint. Otherwise, you can end up with trapped particles under your paint.
Sanding is the Next Step
Once your surfaces are clean, remove all paint by sanding until the surface is smooth and even. Clean your cabinets completely after sanding to remove all sanded particles. When you rub your hand across the surface, you should not end up with grainy particles on your hands.
Don’t Skip the Primer
Applying primer to your clean, sanded surfaces will ensure the paint you apply will stick and cover thoroughly. Oil based primer should be used if you are going to use oil based paint. If latex paint will be used, then choose your primer accordingly. Once you apply the primer, be sure it is completely dry before applying your first coat of paint.
Painting Your Cabinets
You will need to apply several coats of paint to make sure the job will be durable. Your kitchen cabinets take a lot of abuse, so one coat just won’t do. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat. You can decide when you have a smooth, even surface coat.
Don’t get in a hurry when painting kitchen cabinets. Deciding that you must use patience to get the results you want will go a long way in helping you get kitchen cabinets that look like new.
