I opened my kitchen cabinets and drawers the other day and for the first time in a long time, actually took note of all the things I stored there. Of course, there were the usual things like pots, pans, glasses, etc, but there were also things like tape measures, paint brushes, pet medicines, etc.

I live in an older, smaller home so naturally there isn’t enough storage space, particularly in the kitchen. I decided it was high time I looked at ways to better utilize the space I had in the kitchen and get more storage capacity out of my cabinets.

Going With What You Got

I can’t afford to go out and buy new kitchen cabinets so I’ll need to go with what I have. I took out my handy pencil and paper and figured out there were several things I could do to not only increase the amount of storage I have, but to keep the items better organized.

1. I have a corner cabinet that makes the turn against two walls. This is where I currently store my crock pot, blender etc. I don’t use these items that often so I am moving them to an upper cabinet and am thinking of putting a lazy Susan in the corner cabinet. This would make whatever I put there certainly more accessible and it would allow me to more storage space by dividing the cabinet to have an upper and lower shelf.

2. I removed my spices that take up an entire lower shelf of a cabinet and realized I had 3 jars of marjoram. Seriously? I can’t even remember a time I’ve used that stuff. I ordered a spice rack that will accommodate several different sizes of spice containers and will only take up half the amount of space in the cabinet.

3. One particular drawer holds various scissors, knives, and other sharp objects. I need only look at my hands to know how many times I have injured myself in this one kitchen cabinet drawer. I have found several options for drawer dividers plus one made specifically for knives to keep them separated and most importantly, contained with the sharp edge pointing down.

These are just a few ideas that will help in my own kitchen. I have no doubt my list will continue to grow as I delve further into the dark crevices of my kitchen cabinets.
