Custom Finishes on Maple Kitchen Cabinets
Maple kitchen cabinets are a gorgeous choice, but they can be hard to stain. Stain is absorbed unevenly, creating a splotchy finish. However, there is a way to achieve a fantastic-looking stain on your maple cabinets.
Polyurethane
Start by applying one coat of oil-based polyurethane over the wood. This will seal the wood so the final stain is even and attractive. Apply the color you desire by using Minwax Polyshades. This color polyurethane can be used to achieve a beautiful stain. The final step is to apply another clear coat of polyurethane over the entire project.
Painting
Another option is to apply paint over the cabinet. Start by putting polyurethane on the wood to prevent the paint from soaking in. Water down the paint with glazing compound to achieve a translucent appearance. Apply a light coat that will allow the beautiful grain to shine through. Once you have achieved the desired results, protect the finish with a layer of clear polyurethane.
Maple kitchen cabinets can be very difficult to stain. Using polyurethane with stain mixed in will allow you to achieve the wood tone you are looking for. However, glazing the cabinets with your favorite color of paint can also produce an amazing finish.
